How It Works

Step 01
Scan the QR Code

Instant access to guided practices - no apps, logins, or setup required.

Step 02
Start Guided Breathwork

A short audio session helps slow the breath, release tension, and restore a sense of control. Use your own headphones (AirPods, etc.), or the dental office may provide headphones for use in the chair.

Step 03
Regulate in Real Time

The nervous system shifts from stress to a more calm, stable state - right in the chair.

The Science Behind It

This isn't just breathwork - it's nervous system regulation. Breathing directly influences the autonomic nervous system, helping shift the body from a sympathetic (stress) state into a parasympathetic (regulated) state.

FAQ - Calm Chair Systemβ„’

β€œWhen you change the nervous system… you change the physiology, the experience, and the outcome.”

From the founder

Why I created the Calm Chair System

Before this was a system, it was a dental hygienist watching people hold their breath in the chair.

I spent years chairside. I watched patients white-knuckle the armrests, breathe shallow or not at all, and leave more wound up than they came in. I watched the people working on them absorb all of that anxiety, appointment after appointment, and carry it home. Nobody had a tool for the two or three minutes that would have changed the whole visit.

Breathwork is what changed it for me. It has carried me through more than any other kind of work I have done. It is how I learned that we cannot heal until we find safety in our own bodies, and that safety is something you can give yourself in a few slow breaths, exactly where you are sitting.

That is what the Calm Chair System is: short, guided practices for the waiting room, the chair, and the moment between patients. No app to install, no account to make, nothing to figure out. Just a code from your dental office and a few minutes of coming back to yourself.

Registered dental hygienist

Years of clinical work, and a front-row seat to what fear does to a body in the chair, on both sides of it.

Breathwork facilitator

Evidence-informed practices to move the nervous system out of fight-or-flight and back to calm.

Author of two books

The Truth Behind the Smiles and The Gut God Connection, both written from lived experience.

Speaker and podcast host

Keynotes for dental conventions, schools and team retreats, and honest conversations with dentists on Not Alone.

The lie about grief is that only some will experience it. The truth is that everyone will experience grief. Everyone.MΓ©lissa-Sue Methven

I have lived the side of dentistry nobody puts on the brochure: the loss, the burnout, the perfect smile hiding a great deal of pain. It is why the Calm Chair System is built for the people behind the mask as much as for the person in the chair.

Who I am, in my own words

I am an author, speaker, dental hygienist, faith-led wellness coach and breathwork facilitator. For much of my life I felt held back by suppression. It lingered in the background and shaped how I showed up in the world. When I finally recognized its grip, I realized I was not meant to live small or silent. I began speaking my truth, faced the fears I had carried for years, and in that surrender I found freedom.

My work blends science and spirit: oral-systemic health, nervous-system regulation, breathwork, faith and intuitive healing. As a mother, a clinician and a woman deeply led by faith, I am passionate about helping people quiet the noise of fear, regulate their nervous system and reclaim their voice.

I have stood on dental-convention stages and in dental schools with a talk called Breathwork Nervous System Mastery, teaching teams what happens in the body between fight-or-flight and calm, and why it matters for clinicians and patients alike. The Calm Chair System is that same work, made small enough to fit inside an appointment.

The books

The Truth Behind the Smiles

My first book, born from grief and from a profession that hides its pain behind a perfect smile. It opened a conversation about mental health in dentistry that I have carried onto stages, podcasts and television since.

The Gut God Connection

A faith-led, science-informed invitation to listen to your body, calm your nervous system and trust the healing already placed within you. Symptoms reframed not as brokenness, but as guidance back to your truest self.
